Donald Trump has broken plenty of rules throughout his campaign, but he has also broken records.
According to Politico‘s reporting, which includes an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings, the Trump campaign has possibly already raised $100 million from donors who have given less than $200?봫ore than any other GOP nominee in history. Moreover, the campaign has only been actively soliciting donations for less than three months: Trump signed his first email solicitation for donors on June 21.
For comparison, John McCain and Mitt Romney, in 2008 and 2012, respectively, raised less than $64 million in contributions under $200.
However, Trump still lags far behind Democrats: President Obama raised $483.6 million in small donations during his re-election campaign in 2012, Bernie Sanders raised almost $202 million this year during the Democratic primary race, and Hillary Clinton has raised almost $156 million through the end of July.
While Hillary Clinton is still outpacing Trump in terms of both funds and donors?봲he counted 2.3 million donors as of the end of August?봳he billionaire is catching up quickly. Politico reports that he has reached 2.1 million donors in the last three months alone.
